HISTORY OF CARMEL OF ST. JOSEPH – YEAR OF ESTABLISHMENT – 1967
His Eminece on the 19th March 1964 replied to Mother General giving his permission for the new opening in Orlem after consulting the Parish Priest Fr. Noronah then at Orlem. Permission for the canonical erection was then written for by the then Mother General – Mother Alphonsus and the same was granted on the 15th April 1967. In May 1967 at the time of Mother Rita as General, the Convent, Carmel of St. Joseph was found. Sr. Agnes, from Bandra was appointed as Superior with the four sisters already teaching in Orlem – Sr. Yvonne Marie, Sr. Estella, Sr. Inez and Sr. Elfrida. We continued to live in the same house that had been rented before. It was very small but very conveniently situated near the church and the school where the sisters worked. By this time the first class of the girls’ school at Carmel of St. Joseph School was started in another rented building. Each year the classes increased. In the mean time the land was bought and plans were made for the building of the new convent and school at Orlem. His Lordship bishop Longinus Pereira laid the foundation stone on the 14th November 1967.
The year 1970 will be one of the happy memories – one, which proves that Trust in God will never go, unrewarded. This year saw the final settlement of the bifurcation of the girls from the boys of St. Anne’s from Std. V to Std. IX with Sr. Yvonne Marie as Principal. Unfortunately after a month Sr. Yvonne Marie who took all pains for the bifurcation was transferred to Duruelo as superior and Principal and Sr. Marion from Duruelo took the place of Sr. Yvonne Marie as Principal.
This year also saw the completion of that part of the school building, which was to serve as the convent. September 27th, a day of rejoicing for every one for it was on that day Fr. Fermin, a Carmelite Father installed the Blessed Sacrament for us. We left no stone unturned to put up our convent. Sr. Paulette – the local superior commenced the work of building the new convent. It was completed in 1980. Archbishop Simon Pimenta during the celebration of the Holy Eucharist solemnly blessed the new chapel on the 18th of March 1981. Now we can humbly say that with the help of our loving God, we have established well in this place of Orlem, Malad. May He continue to bless our efforts and keep us ever close to Him.
Carmel of St. Joseph School in Orlem, Malad follows the syllabus of Maharashtra State Board of Secondary Education. It has classes from Kindergarten to Std. X. It has won laurels in both academic and non-academic spheres.
